COGNITIVE MAPPING 




INTRODUCTION

Concept mapping is a great way to build upon previous knowledge by connecting new information back to it. Concept maps work very well for classes or content that have visual elements or in times when it is important to see and understand relationships between different things. They can also be used to analyze information and compare and contrast. You create a concept map by writing key words (sometimes enclosed in shapes such as circles, boxes, triangles, etc.) and then drawing arrows between the ideas that are related. Then you add a short explanation by the arrow to explain how the concepts are related. Concept maps may be used by instructional designers, engineers, technical writers, and others to organize and structure knowledge

Concept maps are used to stimulate the generation of ideas, and are believed to aid creativity.[2] Concept mapping is also sometimes used for brain-storming. Although they are often personalized and idiosyncratic, concept maps can be used to communicate complex ideas. Concept mapping was developed by Joseph D. Novak and his research team at Cornell University in the 1970s as a means of representing the emerging science knowledge of students.[8] It has subsequently been used as a way to increase meaningful learning in the sciences and other subjects as well as to represent the expert knowledge of individuals and teams in education, government and business. Concept maps have their origin in the learning movement called constructivism. In particular, constructivists hold that learners actively construct knowledge.

 

BENEFITS OF CONCEPT MAPPING

 Concept maps are widely used in education because

• It facilitates note taking and summarizing gleaning key concepts, their relationships and hierarchy from documents and source materials

• New knowledge creation: like transforming tacit knowledge into an organizational resource, mapping           team knowledge

• Collaborative knowledge modeling and the transfer of expert knowledge

 • Facilitating the creation of shared vision and shared understanding within a team or organization

• Instructional design: concept maps used as Ausubelian “advance organizers” that provide an initial conceptual frame for subsequent information and learning.

• Training: concept maps used as Ausubelian “advanced organizers” to represent the training context and its relationship to their jobs, to the organization’s strategic objectives, to training goals.

 • Communicating complex ideas and arguments

• Enhancing metacognition (learning to learn, and thinking about knowledge).

 

PREPARATION

Before preparing a cognitive map we should be familiar with the unit and the concept related to it. We have to prepare a single unit into a map format and thus, every small details of the unit is important. There is main ideas, broad ideas and specific ideas in a cognitive map. So the detailed analysis of the unit is appropriate before preparing a cognitive map. A few open source mapping softwares are, Compendium, Freeplane, Wisemapping, Xmind, CMAP, VUE, and FREEMIND. Other concept mapping softwares includes, MindMeister, Ayoa, MindGenius, Milanote, Miro, Microsoft Visio, SmartDraw, Lucidchart, Coggle and Visme.

 I used mindomo app for concept mapping. Mindomo comes with many features to make your mind mapping journey as easy and pleasant as possible.  My first cognitive map is from plus two chemistry text book, fourth unit " coordination chemistry". And the second cognitive map is from plus two chemistry text book tenthg unit “alcohol , phenol and ethers”.

 OVERALL REFLECTION OF SECOND                PHASE OF TEACHING PRACTICE

 Due to the current situation of covid-19 the online classes were conducted through Google meet. I selected L.V.H.S   pothencode for my online teaching practice .I got two classes for teaching practice one from eight standard (N) and another from 9th standard (C). For 9 standard students the subject taken was chemistry . The chapter taken from Chemistry was periodic table and for 8th standard students the subject taken was physics. The chapter taken from physics Were  force. 7 classes were  taken for  physics and eight classes were taken for  chemistry. Within 2 weeks the classes where over .Two classes were taken each day except for the first day. The duration of the class was 30 minutes and I prepare a Power Point presentation to make the class more effective and in every day follow up activity was given. Achievement test was Conducted for 9th class students on the chapter periodic table, the duration of the test was one hour and the mark for the test was 25 marks

For peer  teaching class we have to take 15 classes.Duration of the class was 30 minutes .After every peer teaching classes my  peer trainees point out where should I  improve .Peer teaching is one of the best ways to master a particular subject. It is a method of teaching, where a student instructs another student, wherein the former will be an expert and the latter a novice.

This  teaching practice help the me to apply the pedagogical knowledge and skills in teaching .I  understand how important is to teach the topic effectively and teaching learning experience is a main factor for teaching learning process .The teaching practice session developed my teaching skills. for me it was a nice experience and my teaching skills have been developed.

WEEKLY REFLECTION-SECOND WEEK

 WEEKLY REFLECTION (2nd  WEEK)


Due to pandemic ,teaching practice was conducted online through Google meet and peer was taken as direct face to face class.The school I got for teaching practice was L.V.H.S Pothencode.I got two classes for teaching practice one in 8th N for Physics and another in 9th C for chemistry.

During the second week of my second phase teaching practice session I had to take 10 online teaching sessions.


On Monday(08/02/2021) I took class from the chapter force for 8th N  and the topic taken was frictional force, rolling friction and sliding friction (time 7 to 7:30am)

And the second class was taken for 9th standard students. The topic taken for 9th standard was representative elements.(time 7:30 to 8am)


On Tuesday(09/02/2021) : I took class for 8N students.. continuation of force chapter was taken .The topic taken was the different cases in which the frictional force is felt lubricant ,method to reduce friction and streamlining.(time 7 to 7:30am)

I took class from the chapter of periodic table,continuation of this chapter was taught.The topic taken was transition and inner transition elements for 9th C students from 7:30  to 8:00 am.


On Wednesday (10/02/2021):I took the topic thrust and pressure for 8th N standard students ,continuation of the force chapter.The class Time was 7 to 7:30 am.

And The second class was taken for 9th standard students. Continuation of periodic table was taken. topic taken today was periodic trends in the periodic table.The class time was  from 7:30 to 8am.


On Thursday (11/02/2021) : the first class was taken for 8th standard students and the continuation of force was taken .The topic taken today was liquid pressure.The time of class was 7 to 7:30 am.

The second class was  for 9th standard students and continuation of periodic table was taken. The topic taken on thuis day was ionization energy .The time of the class was 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m.


On Friday (12/03/2021): the first class was taken for 8th standard students ,the continuation of the force chapter was taken, this is the last topic of this chapter..The topic taken was Atmospheric pressure and the class timing of this class was from 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

 And second class was taken for 9th standard students ,the continuation of periodic table was taken, this is the last topic of this chapter .The topic taken on this day was electronegativity and metalloids.The class time was from 7:30 to 8 am.

For every class follow up activity was given

 On 13th February achievement test was conducted for 9th standard students from the chapter periodic table. The duration of the test paper was  1 hour and the mark for the achievement test was 25 mark

I used PPT for online teaching to make the class more interesting. When Students asked their doubts and I gave more explanation about it once more .In every class I Concluded the class by summarising the important points .I asked some questions after the class and gave assignments. Overall it was a nice teaching session and it was a new experience for me.This teaching session helped me to develop my teaching skills. It helps me to develop my techno skills and it help to me to be a good teacher.

The class began on february 3rd. The school selectedfor training section was LVHS pothencode. The class alloted to me  was eight standard. My class time was scheduled in the evening 5pm-6pm. I had organised a trail class for the students in the previous day inorder to check their connection andto understand ow they use this facility. I started the class on time. I created a good support with the students and took attendance. Then I started a new lesson, 'metals' from chemistry and I focused on corrosion of metals etc. I created a mental readiness among learners by showing some pictures and videos. By linking that started the portion. Through the videos and pictures they could understand the topic very easily. Scaffolding questions were given and students responded actively. Summary of the topic taught was given. Finally I gave the activity and concluded the class.

 WEEKLY REFLECTION (1st WEEk)


Due to pandemic ,teaching practice was conducted online through Google meet and peer was taken as direct face to face class.The school I got for teaching practice was L.V.H.S Pothencode.I got two classes for teaching practice one in 8th N for Physics and another in 9th C for chemistry.

During the first week of my second phase teaching practice session I had to take 2 peer teaching and 5 online teaching sessions.

On Wednesday(03/02/2021) I took class from the chapter periodic table, the topic taken was history of periodic table and mendeleev's periodic table for 9th C students of L.V.H.S Pothencode.The class timing was 7:30 to 8:00 am.

On Thursday(04/02/2021) I took class from the chapter of periodic table,continuation of this chapter was taught.The topic taken was advantages and limitation of mendeleev's periodic table and Modern Periodic Table for 9th C students from 7  to 7:30 am and for 8th N students the topic taken was force.The class time was 7:30 to 8: am.

On Friday (05/02/2021)I took the topic electronic configuration continuation of periodic table for 9th C students from 7:30 to 8 am  and next class was for 8th N students ,the topic taught was contact and non contact force ,the class time was from 8 to 8:30 am and on this same day two peer classes were taken. Peer teaching class was on the subject Physics of 9th standard ,the topic taught was capillarity, adhesive and Cohesive force. For the second peer teaching class  the topic taken was force of gravity from the 9th standard textbook.
